Tottenham to delay offering Harry Kane a new contract

Published on: 22 February 2022

Tottenham are expected to delay offering star striker Harry Kane a new contract until the England captain has had time to assess his future amid the ongoing possibility he could look to leave.

Kane was keen to leave Spurs last summer over concerns about the club’s ambition and ability to compete for trophies at the highest level. Premier League champions Manchester City wanted to sign him, but Spurs dug in and refused to let him go.

The 28-year-old initially missed the first two games of the Premier League season back in August while the transfer window was still open following a controversial extended holiday. He also took time to hit form, scoring only once in his first 13 league appearances. But Kane has started to fire again over the last two months, culminating in a match-winning performance against City.

The issue of his future is not over. Kane has just over two years left to run on the long-term contract he signed shortly before winning the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup and it puts potential suitors in a slightly stronger position than they were last summer as his value will begin to fall as the time left on his contract reduces.

But rather than offer a new contract at this time, The Athletic has reported that Spurs will wait as Kane wants to assess the club’s progress and longer-term vision. The suggestion is that if talks are to begin, it will be the player who has to initiate, with no plans for conversations until the summer.

Kane is more likely to commit his future to Tottenham, which is their wish, if he believes it possible to win trophies with them. But he may have the opportunity to consider other interest if Manchester City, who remain without a main striker, reignite their interest, or others come to the table.
