Two newcomers named in Ghana squad to face Sudan

Ghana stop-gap coach Akwesi Appiah has called-up two newcomers Emmanuel Clottey and Seth Owusu in his 20-man squad released for next month's 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan.

Clottey, 23, was top scorer of the 2007 Ghana Premier League but could not survive abroad after failed stints in Austria and Denmark.

The former Ghana Under-23 striker has joined Berekum Chelsea after serving a one-year ban for his role in his illegal registration in the Ghana League two seasons ago.

Left-back Seth Owusu has been picked from Ghana Premier League leaders Kessben.

Centre-back John Mensah has made a return to the team after missing the opening qualifier at Swaziland early this month.

Quartet Daniel Adjei, John Boye, David Addy and Yaw Antwi were the casualties to have been excluded from the squad that began the qualifier.

Appiah was mandated by the Football Association after a meeting on Friday to take temporary charge of the World Cup quarter-finalists for the qualifier.

The former Ghana captain wants to impress as the Ghana FA who are seeking a replacement for Serb Milovan Rajevac.

"We decided to name the just 18 foreign-based players because not all invited will be on the bench anyway. The call-ups to the locally-based players will serve a purpose. First, confidence to them and secondly paying respect to the local league," Interim coach Akwesi Appiah told Ghanasoccernet.com

"Mathew Amoah has returned from injury and it's prudent to give him time to recover fully."

Ghana play the Nile Crocodiles on 10 October in Accra.
