Hosts France came through a relatively easy group undefeated to qualify for the knockout stages. Whilst they have not been entirely convincing, perfect tournament teams enter their peak at the latter stages so France will now be looking to put their foot down and really go for the top prize at Euro 2016.

I expected Republic of Ireland to crash out of this tournament in the group stage but they managed to secure a shock win against a much-changed Italy side to secure their passage into the last 16.

The French have looked nervy throughout this tournament; However, this is not unique to them as most host teams at major tournaments seem to let the occasion get to them (Brazil 2014, South Africa 2010). Despite this, France will be confident they can win the tournament just like they have done the last two times they have hosted a major championship.

Martin O’Neill’s Ireland side go into this game with nothing to lose whilst confidence will be high after a last minute win against the Italians.

Although Ireland will be high on confidence and the pressure is all on the French, I cannot see past a France win. The odds reflect this with once again, the value on a France win being pretty much worthless so therefore you must look at other markets.

As previously mentioned, the French look nervous and I think they will struggle to break this resiliant Irish defence down. With this in mind I have gone for a draw in the first half and France to win the second half (probably through a wonder-goal or an Irish mistake) at 11/4.
