Both Poland and Portugal endured extremely tough games in the Round 16 both, as both were taking into extra time. Poland went all the way to penalties, whereas Portugal managed to take the win a few minutes before spot-kicks were needed. There is no doubt that this extra football would’ve taken plenty out of both sides, so that needs to be factored in here. In such a situation many would suggest that both teams will want to approach this one cautiously and save some of their powers.

From a betting point of view the odds on under 2.5 goals are too short here (7/20). But we should also keep in mind that both sides possess a real attacking threat and could easily create a game that isn’t short on goals. If you’re of this opinion then over 2.5 goals, at 21/10, isn’t a bad bet. After all, Poland have Lewandowski and Blaszczykowski while Portugal have Ronaldo, Nani and a few others.

Ronaldo can still find the confidence to guide his team to the semi-final. They’re still in the race, and their win over a strong Croatian side will certainly have helped to instill a confidence within their ranks. The same with Poland – they were really tested by a decent Switzerland, but dug deep and fought to the end to claim the victory.

It is reasonable to assume that Portugal will try to dictate the game, playing on the front foot. And with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo in their forward line they should be able to threaten the Polish goal. If this is the case, Poland will be looking to take advantage of their pace on the counter, something that the rapid Błaszczykowski successfully executed against Switzerland. With this in mind it is more than reasonable to go for both teams to score here at the very appealing price of 6/4.
