Published on: 19 May 2022

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has been awarded a football for speaking out against the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The Champions League ball has been signed by Ukrainian soldiers, who have been fighting for their country since February.

Oleg Smaliychuk, who has been an intermediary of players such as the Real Madrid's Andriy Lunin, is one of the people who have signed the ball.

In February, Guardiola voiced his support for Ukraine as well as his appreciation for the positive reaction to the situation.

"It's a concern," said Guardiola. "In the country where our player [Oleksandr Zinchenko] was born, innocent people are being killed.

"How are you going to feel? I guess that's how it feels. The club is close to him. Of course. he has our support, we are living every day together and he knows we are here. You have our unconditional support."
