Arturo Vidal has responded to criticism from people in Chile for his backing of the Black Lives Matter movement.

The Barcelona midfielder joined people across the world in posting a black square on social media in support of #BlackOutTuesday.

Chilean international Catalina Carrillo's reply to the post gained a lot of traction on Twitter.

"How great you see yourself "supporting" Arturito... but you forgot about your village in October," she said.

In response to criticism, Vidal took to Instagram to defend himself.

"You can talk and say what you want about me, but..." he began.

"I'm from a village. I'm from one of the poorest neighbourhoods in Santiago and now I can say that I am who I am thanks to the people that believed in me and experienced the same things as me.

"Thanks to them as well, family and friends...

"And for those without a memory who want to turn my village against me, who care more about colours than the equality of our country.

"That's why I leave life in what I do. I'm not a talker, I'm a realist and I have earned everything."
