Ghana youth international Wakaso Mubarak played his first European club competition match on Thursday night when he helped Villarreal beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 at the BayArena.

The 21-year-old started ahead of regular Santi Cazorla and partnered Marchena in midfield together with Borja Valero and Bruno.

The host took the lead through Michal Kadlec in the 33rd minute but less than ten minutes later Wakaso recovered the ball, passed to Marchena, who put Rossi through one-on-one with Adler for the equalizer.

Nilmar made it 1-2 for the La Liga side on 70 minutes before Gastro equalized for Leverkusen but Nilmar nicked in the winner on the 90th minute mark.

Wakaso, who initially joined the second string side of the Yellow Submarines after being booted out by Segunda Division side Elche FC, has overly impressed with senior team games.

He was withdrawn after 61 minutes.

Head coach Juan Carlos Garrido has reposed a lot of confidence in the former AshantiGold trainee.
