Watford forward looks for Italian escape

Watford’s Alessandro Diamanti is set for a return to his homeland during January as he looks to secure first team football.

The veteran joined the Hornets in the summer but has been frozen out at Vicarage Road, not having stepped onto the field since November 7.

Tuttomercatoweb indicate that the former Bologna talisman is likely to head back to Serie A, with Udinese, Hellas Verona and Atalanta the front runners for his signature.

The Mastini would likely present the same problem as he faces at Watford, as Luigi Del Neri favours a 4-4-2 system, which is not conducive to Diamanti’s best position as a deep-lying forward.

The Zebrette have links with Watford as both clubs are owned by the Pozzo family, and their ties would mean a deal would be easier to strike between the two clubs whereas Atalanta may struggle to finance a transfer.

Former Italy international Diamanti spent part of last season on loan with Fiorentina, scoring twice in 11 games for the Viola.
