'Working harder than ever': Virgil van Dijk posts first photos of rehabilitation after ACL injury

Virgil van Dijk has been pictured in training just five weeks after undergoing surgery on a serious knee injury.

The Liverpool defender has been out of action since picking up an anterior cruciate ligament injury during the Merseyside derby on October 17.

Van Dijk underwent a successful operation at the end of October but it is feared he could miss the rest of the season.

The 29-year-old though has delighted Liverpool fans on Friday, as he posted pictures of him at Liverpool's AXA Training Centre in Kirby on his social media platforms.

'Working harder than ever' was the centre-back's message, alongside four images of him using the facilities at the club's new training complex in Kirkby.

Van Dijk is likely to still be some way off returning to on-pitch training, but the images of his rehabilitation will be a boost to Liverpool who have suffered a number of injuries this season, particularly in defence.

The Dutchman was taken off six minute into the match with Everton after he was on the end of a reckless challenge from goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Liverpool have not ruled out the prospect of van Dijk featuring again this season and they are hopeful he can make a speedy recovery despite the severity of the injury.

Manager Jurgen Klopp recently spoke about his defender's injury as he said: 'Considering the circumstances, he's doing really well.

'His knee doesn't look good, to be honest; it doesn't look like a knee should look - but it looks good for a knee with that surgery and the time he had since the surgery.

'So, yes, of course we are in contact and he's doing well, that's true.'

Liverpool are also without his main centre-back partner Joe Gomez who picked up a knee injury during training for England.

Despite their defensive crisis Liverpool have done well as they sit joint top of the Premier League and finished top of their Champions League group.
