AC Milan 3-0 Inter: Icardi penalty miss defines Nerazzurri loss

AC Milan claimed their second Serie A win of 2016 with a convincing 3-0 victory over Inter at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on Sunday night.

Milan showed that they were getting back to their best with a dominating derby performance, which saw Alex open the scoring before conceding a penalty which Mauro Icardi missed. That proved to be a turning point as Carlos Bacca and M’Baye Niang grabbed a goal each later on.

Stunning choreography from the fans inside the San Siro made for an exciting atmosphere and it appeared to fuel players on early on, with a terrific sprint from Niang in the second minute setting the pace, although it led to nothing.

Milan defender Alex had a strong game, consistently blocking strikes and crosses from the likes of Eder and Stevan Jovetic and the Brazilian can be named as the reason the Rossoneri still had a clean sheet at the half hour mark.

He then got his reward a few minutes later when he went up for a corner, and his height proved to be an advantage as he headed home to give Sinisa Mihajlovic’s men the lead from a Keisuke Honda cross.

Alex’s superb match took a nasty turn just before 70 minutes, however, when he brought down substitute Icardi in the box, although luck was on his side as Icardi struck the post.

They paid for that miss a few minutes later when Bacca doubled the Diavolo’s lead when he tapped home a brilliant cross from Niang.

Three points were secured when Niang got a goal for his efforts a few minutes afterwards as he directed home a rebound as his shot was initially blocked, and some weak Inter defending proved costly once again.

Mihajlovic and his men now sit just six points outside the top three in the Serie A table in sixth, while Inter are in fourth.
