Airlifting cash to World Cup players common practice - Ghana FA

Ghana's football association on Wednesday defended its decision to charter a plane to carry $3 million in bonus money to players in Brazil, saying the country had done the same at the last two World Cups.

The West African nation's tournament was tarnished by a pay dispute, which disrupted preparations for their final Group G match, and infighting which led to midfielders Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sulley Muntari being suspended from the team.

Ghana President John Mahama stepped in to try to resolve the bonus row and cash was flown out to the players but the 2010 quarter-finalists crashed out of the tournament at the group stage anyway.

Mahama has since called for an inquiry into the events that led to Ghana's dramatic exit from the World Cup and FIFA has announced it will take steps to ensure that similar pay disputes will not be allowed to happen in future.

Speaking to reporters in Accra, Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kwesi Nyantakyi said airlifting cash to players was nothing new.

"In 2006 the same practice was adopted. Cash was carried from Ghana to Germany and paid to players," he said. "In was picked from Ghana to South Africa and paid to players - that is the practice."

The incident has sparked a political row at home, with the country's main opposition New Patriotic Party claiming the practice amounted to money-laundering.

"This is a complete embarrassment to the country and Africa. It is scandalous and has ruined the hard earned good reputation of the country across the world," the party said in a statement on Wednesday.

This is my problem with these NPP guys. They are hypocrites and would like to take advantage of every situation. In 2006 cash was flown to Germany the same way as was done in 2014. When did the law on money-laundering change? Instead of telling Ghanaians, we did it in 2006, that it is not a good practice so it should be avoided, they have suddenly become angels and are behaving as if they have never heard anything like this in their political lives. HYPOCRITES!!!!

This points to one direction, that is, since 2006 or for the past 8 yrs, FOOLISH OR CRAZY people have been in the helm of affairs taking decisions for our dear BS. I must say this type of FOLLY percolates in all aspect of our leadership. Mr. Nyantakyi the fact that you took that STUPID decision in 2006, repeated it in 2010 and now 2014 and still did not see this atitude as wrong could depict how unprecedented your FOOLISHNESS has been. Stop using that as an excuse because that further damages you reputation that is if you have any. So had it not been people outcry you would not have seen the foolishness in airlifting that amount of cash? If you cannot make this simple intelligent choice then you cannot be the President of GFA and therefore must resign or be forced.

U can pay the players in cash, nobody cares and Ghanaians has not complains about it because it was done in a more decent way! People are pussed off because this time it was done wrongly in the full glare of the international media and cameras! What a disgrace! People are mad because of the way it was done and instead of these morons apologizing to us, they are bluffing about it! They defending their actions vehemently because this is the easiest way of stealing money from Ghana because if its done electronically, we can trace their dubious activities! Is more easier to divert physical cash or bills to ones account and my HEART BLEEDS FOR THIS NATION! now, international communities such as the world bank, IMF and other donor nations ll be wary of us and they ll even think twice of loaning us monies because they now they how corrupted we are as Ghanaians! Infact, my friends has started calling Ghana a WEIRD NATION thanks to these CRIMINALS PARADONG THEMSELVES AS LEADERS!
