Ghana will be paying $75,000 to each player as appearance fee at the 2014 World Cup, Sports Minister Elvis Afriyie Ankrah has confirmed.

The amount remains unchanged from what was paid to the Black Stars players at the last World Cup in South Africa where each member of the playing body was handed $75,000 in appearance fees.

The state has also decided to maintain the amount paid as winning bonuses for the last World Cup in the upcoming tournament in Brazil as part of the austerity measures of government.

Cabinet over the weekend approved about $9.8m budget for Ghana’s participation at the 2014 World Cup.

The approved figure falls far short of the about $20m budget reported to have been tabled by the Ghana FA and the Sports Ministry to the Presidency.

It was expected that the enhanced demands reportedly being made by the Black Stars players were included in the alleged $20m budget.

But the Sports Minster Elvis Afriyie Ankrah has revealed that the amount of $75,000 paid to the players as appearance fees as well as the amount paid as winning bonuses for the last World Cup would be maintained.

“Based on our discussion the government insist that we should maintain our bonuses and for the record, the 2010 figure was $75,000 and so we should maintain the 2010 figure because we are all going through challenges,” he told Accra-based Power FM.

“[Winning bonuses] will also be maintained.”

$75,000x23 players.yet we still have broken schools, no proper drinking water, bad roads and poor sanitation. Please GFA, majority of these guys are already rich why bother.I think it's just an honor to play for the national team and not to make money from it. The world cup is an exposure for these players to show their talent to the world and get recorgnized

$75,000 is nothing compared to the what the do nothing MPs, ministers and government officials in Ghana get for doing nothing for Ghana. These players bring happiness to us more than any group of people that represent the country. They need to get paid now because they get no pension when they retire. These players are stars whether we like it or not, and stars get paid. If you don't want to pay, withdraw from the tournament and let the countries who are ready to take advantage of the opportunities the world brings go.

Just ask each player to make a choice; WC 2014 or $10.000,-- appearance fee. There are so many good players who would chose WC 2014! BUT the results.......!The way forward should be less "management c'ttee/water carriers" and "awam technical teamsters".The "appearance money" and bonus should be taxed! Ghanaians should not also forget that the teams of these foreign based players (I think also the local based players) also recieve some sort of "appearance money" from FIFA after the tournament, the amounts depend also on how far the national team gets in the competition! They should claim some of the money from their teams and stop harassing GFA and the Govt.!

Have you asked yourself how much university lecturers and doctors make in Ghana? Less than $10,000 for the whole year. And you are happy paying 75,000 to footballers to play just for a few weeks. I think Ghana has misplaced her priorities.

Similarly, university lecturers and doctors, engineers and other professionals here in US make peanuts compared to what stars - soccer, basketball, football and baseball players make...lack of development or the current state of the Ghana economy is not the fault of Black Star players, and refusing to pay them $75,000 will not result in making Ghana a better place tomorrow! The leaders of the country are clueless about management, they lack vision for the country, and they have no development plan or strategy in place even for the next 4 my friend let us enjoy our football and world cup in peace!

This should not be the problem but that amount should be based on a target clearly set out for the entire team, for instance paying that money only if they take us to the semifinals or the finals. If they fail they lose all or maybe we can negotiate for a lesser fee but it should not be blanket. After all it is in their interest to be part of this football fiesta which not many players get the opportunity to represent their nation and most recent example is Laryea Kingston who has not forgotten the dream of still playing in the world cup. Although that dream has long disserted him. The world cup stages is the biggest stage to compete with the best of the world and as we all know not many players are able to stay in form to participate more than once due to age cheating especially in Africa. The players also stand the chance of benefiting after a good show because most of these players have their contracts improved as well as getting better offers from bigger teams. So I agree to the quoted fee but should be on condition that they take us to the semi-final stage or risk losing all, period!!!!!!!!!!
