Chelsea set to name ex-Ghana coach Avram Grant as new manager
Ghana's Israeli coach Avram Grant attends the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations third place football match between Burkina Faso and Ghana in Port-Gentil on February 4, 2017.

Former Ghana coach Avram Grant is set to make a shock return to Chelsea in the wake of a coaching crisis at the English side.

Club owner Roman Abramovich has identified the former Black Stars boss as a potential successor to Antonio Conte, who is on the verge of being sacked.

The Russian owner of the Blues has been angling a move for  Italian boss Maurizio Sarri to replace his compatriot who failed to impressive this season.

Chelsea could only finish fifth on the Premier League table which was one of the worse results the club has been since Abrahamovic took over the club.

This means they miss out on Champions League football next season and didn't impress in Europe, compounding their woes.

However the appetite for another Italian coach is waning fast because of extreme fiscally-conservative methods which the club would be taking in the coming years.

Even though Napoli have hired Carlo Ancelotti to coach the side they are yet to cancel Sarri's contract which means they might have two coaches next season.

Conte on the other hand doesn't want to resign so that he would lose the full payout of £9million if Chelsea sack him.

Abrahamovic is also concerned that breaking Sarri's contract would require him paying  £7m release clause.

This means the Russian billionaire would have to rely on Grant who is an integral member of Abramovich’s inner circle and a key advisor

Abramovich views Grant as a steady pair of hands after the Israeli steered Chelsea to the Champions League final back in 2008.

The Chelsea owner has been angered by the decision not to give him a new UK visa by the Home Office and could be looking to sell up.

Abramovich took the decision to stop plans of  building a new Stamford Bridge saying he will not invest more into a country where he is not permitted to work.

Conte won the Premier League title in his debut season at Stamford Bridge and lifted the FA Cup at the end of this season, but the 48-year-old is keen to move on ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

Grant coached Ghana from 2015 and took the Black Stars to the final of the tournament in Equatorial Guinea only to lose to Ivory Coast on penalties with a young squad.

He left the position two years later after the country reached the semi final of the tournament in Gabon.
