Football fans in Accra have described Stephen Appiah's international retirement as shocking and premature.

The 29-year-old called time on his 14-year-old stint with the Black Stars on his personal website on Sunday.

Appiah played 68 times for Ghana and a return of 17 goals as a midfielder.

"I saw him at the World Cup and I think he was okay and this comes us a shock to me," Francis Adjei," a football fan in New Town told Ghanasoccenet.com

"I'm very shocked to hear Stephen Appiah has resigned. They have to do something about it-The GFA, they have to try to call him back," Nii Tagoe added.

"It's not good for the Black Stars because Stephen Appiah is the inspirational captain," another female football enthusiast Florence Obinim commented.

Appiah captained Ghana at her debut World Cup appearance in 2006 and played a cameo role at this year's finals in South Africa.
