Ghana coach Appiah worried over instability at the back ahead of AFCON

Posted On Wednesday, 5th December 2012

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah is worried about the left and right back positions

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah is confident the Black Stars can end a 31-year wait for an African title but admits the problematic left back position remains his major headache.

The Ghanaians have always been tagged as one of the favourite to win the title but have in the process flatter to deceive for the past three decades.

The four-time African champions have experimented with players for the problematic left back position over the last six years without huge success.

The likes of Razak Nuhu, Daniel Opare, Samuel Inkoom, Lee Addy, Nana Kwesi Asare and Massawudu Alhassan have all had a crack at the position.

German-based Hans Adu-Sarpei enjoyed a relative success at the left back role until age caught up with him but Esperance defender Harrison Afful has come into the fray to bring some sort of stability at the back.

With 45 days left for the start of the tournament, the Ghana trainer is hopeful of making history but having sleepless night about the back.

“My major problem is the left side and I must admit that I do not feel safe when the right back position either, and that is why, incidentally, I’m looking for solutions,” Appiah said

“It will be difficult but hardly impossible, and when I read the determination on the faces of our players and I see  what we’re currently providing, I think we can end this drought.”

The Ghanaians are housed in group B where they will play DR Congo, Mali and less-fancied Niger in Port Elizabeth.

The Black Stars last won the Nations Cup in 1982.

    Old article idiots!!

  2. Saxcee says:

Mr, are you saying so far you can’t get any decent Ghanaian player that can boss the left back?
    Do you seek at all?

    • Kay says:

A good coach will not come out and point his weakest area in the team. What do you want your rivals to do but to exploits that area through out the tournament?
Akwasi Appiah is nervous as the AFCON approaches. We have great left-backs that can easily go back and defend, is that not what you promised? more attacking and defending together?

  3. GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! says:

AFFUL N AKAMINKO FOR THE RIGHT BACK, DAVE ADDY N NANA ASARE FOR THE LEFT….RAHIM AYEW, WAKASSO AS UTILITY PLAYERS

  4. kuukuphilly says:

This should not be a problem 4 u at all as a coach.I can see everyone trying hard to cement a place so u should be able to pick ur guy when the time comes..(may god help us)

  5. real sabacious says:

I sometimes dont understand Akwasi Appiah!wakaso, david addy and nana akwasi can play the left back position perfectly,so what’s ur worries?i was expecting to hear him complaining on the right back instead.even jerry akaminko, afful and paintsil are there to chose from. You have no excuse if u dare fail to bring the trophy.select active and inform players and the sky will be ur limit!!!

    • Jaja says:

True dat. It is rather the right-back position he should be worried about. Never have we had such a rich variety of quality left-backs in the Black Stars!
      - Look at David Addy, playing every single match with the topflight in Portugal!
      - Nana Asare, captain of the Dutch FC Utrecht. He’s a great, experienced left-foot defender/midifelder.
      - Wakaso, same thing! Young, strong, fit left-back.

  6. Pillar says:

Coach, why must you brood over this, look Wakaso Mubarak was a left back strong defender before those European coaches converted him to play midfield to suit their whims and style of play. He tackles well, can overlap, has a very good recovery rate, superior ariel ability, a ball juggler and good sense of timing when defending.Coach, you have no point to get worried just put on your tactical lens and be innovative just like what Ernst Middendrop did to Louis Agyemang.Stop this mediocrity thinking and think aloud and outside the box.

  7. mate says:

Nana kwesi asare is good as a winger very average as a leftback , wakaso hasnot played leftback this whole season and david addy is also good offensively and poor defensively. The coach is right we definately have leftback problems. I think afful can solve the right back problem.

  8. Chu says:

I understand mayele when he says he is finding difficulty because we can count the number of crosses afful made in the last 4 competitive blackstars game at left back. Secondly, coaches have failed to identify how to use a cultured Addy with the exception of selas. Akwasi Asare we saw in our friendly against Egypt showed no solid defensiveness like the gabonese left-back. The least said about the right the better

  9. A.rahim says:

this man of Kwesi appiah realy needed help or he’s lack of sight

  10. amy says:

Mate, u are right! We have offensive minded left foot players that do not suit our 4-3-2-1 formation. In order to use Addy or Nana kwassy, we need to change the whole team organization, which may bring other problems. But I am positive that the Dubai camping will be used to improve both the right and left back in term of covering. It’s now a question of who will adapt better to the the defensive demands of our organization

  11. selfmade says:

The only way to defend is to attack and ll it be prudent to called quincy owusu abeyie to help us with our attack!!! The biggest problem in the bs is not the full backs but rather a potent striker as well as a playermaker!!! The so called problematic full backs can be easily solved by using the right players at the place rather than relying on players who are attacking inclined with little defensive power!! The first work of full backs is to block crosses from opponents and any other attributes are just nothing!! We have problems over there because we always prefer or used players who are very attacking minded with little defensive power ie inkoom, mohammed, pantsil etc….. if appiah wants to solve this problem,he should consider players with strong defensive powers over hardrunning players!! Some of our central backs can easily filled these roles easily!! Viva the revolutioncioooo!!!

  12. Nii Mensah Narh says:

Akwasi Appiah should call the french-born ghanaian player Jerry Vandam at French division Lille.

  13. GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! says:

AA IS WORRIED BCOS HE CANT BRING HIMSELF TO SELECT PLAYERS STRICTLY ON MERIT, BUT THRU NTUAHO/BRIBE…LOL SO HE IS HAVING HEADACHES…LOL
DAVE ADDY N NANA ASARE FOR LEFT BACK. AFFUL N AKAMINKO FOR RIGHT BACK. ABEYIE N MPONG FOR RIGHT WING. ATSU N WAKASSO FOR LEFT WING. RAHIM AYEW AS UTILITY PLAYER. DONT CALL PAINSTIL N DEREK BOATENG.
    STRIKERS; YIADOM, WARRIS,GYAN, CLOTTEY.
EXCUSE KWAWO ASAMOAH FROM THIS TOURNAMNT. IN OVER 40 APPEARANCES AS AN ATTACKING MIDFIELDER FOR GH, THIS TOOL HAS SCORED 1 GOAL. MEANWHILE, JOHN MENSAH CAN SCORE 3 GOALS IN 1 TOURNAMNT. AA, LISTEN TO ME. DONT CALL ASAMOAH….AWAL MOHAMMED, NII ADJEI, JOHN MENSAH, VORSAH, JONATHAN MENSAH, BOYE, ANNAN, BADU. WE ALSO HVE RABIU MOHAMMED, YARTEY, AFRIYIE ACQUAH…DEDE AS ATTACKING MIDFIELDER….U SEE THE LIST. IF WE GO WITH SUCH PLAYERS, NO TEAM CAN BEAT GH. KPEY PLAYERS

  14. ERIC NANA BOATENG says:

Mmmm, why should AA be really woried abt our left backs while we are blessed with the like of DAVID NII ADDY,a world cup winner, one of the First best ten players chosen by FIFA,Current form is amazing,DAVID is wealth to be the left back of the BLACK STARS.AA pls put tins at the right place.
