Ghana and Columbus Crew defender Harrison Afful says he is encouraged to do more after being named the 2014 Sports Writers Association of Ghana’s footballer of year.

The former Esperance man who now plays his football in the MLS with Columbus Crew beat off competition from Asamoah Gyan and Swansea City’s Andre Ayew to win the coveted award.

Afful was one of the positive points of Ghana’s chaotic world cup campaign in Brazil and won the best player when the Black Stars played out a pulsating 2-2 drawn game against the world Champions Germany.

The Columbus Crew right back is best remembered in the game for his flawless assist which fetched Ghana’s equalizer after Mario Gotze had put the German’s ahead.

The former Asante Kotoko man also helped Esperance to finish the Tunisian league in 3rd place last season.

“I will like to take this opportunity to thank all Ghanaians and the SWAG committee for the votes and being selected as player of the year,” Afful said

“I promise to do more for Ghana and thank you and God bless you all.”

The 29-year-old is expected to line up for the Black Stars when they take on Canada in an international friendly on the 13th of October.
