Ghana kicked out of World Cup after Portugal defeat

Asamoah Gyan scoring the equalizer for the Black Stars

Ghana failed to reach the knockout stage of the 2014 after losing 2-1 to Portugal on Thursday in their final Group G match in Brasilia.

This the first time the Black Stars could not progress from the Group stage in three tournaments.

It was Portugal who fired the warning shot early on six minutes when Cristiano Ronaldo smashed the crossbar with a cross from the right.

That scary moment provided the tonic for Portugal to attack and midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu fouled Joao Moutinho with a sliding tackle.

Ronaldo effected a decent free-kick but Ghana goalkeeper Fatau Dauda was up to the task and parried it away for a corner-kick

Dauda was at hand again to deny the Real Madrid star’s powerful header with a superb save.

It was a point-black header but the Orlando Pirates gloves man was agile and attentive on his line.

Ghana reacted and Gyan was teed up inside the box but his goal-bound shot was blocked by goalkeeper Beto.

On the half-hour mark, Portugal shot ahead through an own goal when defender John Boye’s out-stretched right leg directed Miguel Veloso’s innocuous cross into the net.

There were shouts for a penalty from Ghana players after Gyan dropped inside the box but referee Nawaf Shukralla waived play to continue.

In the second half, Ghana looked energized and leveled the scoreline in the 57th minute when Gyan leapt to head home Kwadwo Asamoah’s cross.

It was a record setting sixth goal for the Al Ain striker who is now Africa’s all-time top scorer in World Cup history.

Three minutes later, Gyan turned provided and glided in a cross which was headed wide by Waris from scoring distance.

From there on it looked like a seesawing contest with Portugal popping up occasionally to mount attacks.

Talisman Ronaldo then scored the second goal-his tournament first-by smashing in from close range.

The reigning World Footballer of the Year profited from a poor goalkeeping display by flapping the ball back into play a save into play.

The rest of the ten minutes was topsy-turvy but Portugal looked confident and protected their lead to the end of the whistle.

But both teams could not progress from the taxing Group G as Germany and USA advanced.

why would you remove ayew #1. #2 duada, grab the ball. #3 waris....oh my days. #4 Michael Essien may be old BUT HE STILL GOT A CONTRACT FROM AC MILAN. Not orlando pirates or some sweedish football club. You need the leadership from a veteran. #4 Ghana FA you need a total sweep through of all officials. The corruption is inexcusable. How can you send players to play for your country and not play them. Meanwhile you give your coach an extension and he has only won once in the last 7 games. I cant't even cheer for Ghana until they fix things drastically.

Appiah has had a losing record with the Sr. team and he has only won once against a team outside of Africa which was the lousy South Korea. Appiah, please resign and GFA go and get Milovan Rajevac back and call it a day. If it were not for Gyan the players would not respect Appiah. He must leave immediately

Dauda, Dauda, Dauda, Dauda, Dauda, Dauda, Dauda, Dauda, Dauda, Dauda, Dauda…….wasa papapapapapa…….akoa yi asa o —-yet, akwasi says “he is number one”! Yeah….we are witnesses …ladies and gentlemen! Enough said! Akwasi Appiah shouldn’t even get home before they give him his sack letter! The most abysmal and shambolic performance by Ghana ever….since 2006! And it was spearheaded by a “local”, “home bred”, useless and clueless coach! Twiaaaa……that’s what u get from Africa —-so talented yet not enough brains to go with the talent or manage the talent! Akwasi Appiah has no tactical brains —and the players are not happy about him —and if the foolish GFA cannot see, then everyone of them must go! PUNKS! Akwasi Appiah must go! Technical team overhauled! When a coach is tactically n technically bankrupt, players don't respect him!

selfish, greedy, lazy, pride less, arrogant, focus less Ghana players. With regards to the coach I like the him, but he has know technical ability or has the respect he needs to perform the work. Basically he had lost control of the players. The GFA hmmmmm don't even start me on them useless bribes taken gits

I repeat, any coach that cannot come from behind to win a match, even against Montenegro, is not a good coach! After Ghana equalized, AA should have brought in Opare and moved Kwadwo Asamoah to central midfield to work with Ayew behind Gyan Pulled out Waris and Agyeman Badu and play Aquah and Rabiu in front of the defense When you need goals you don’t wait till the 75th minute to make subs as though everything is ok! Even his assistant Max Konadu was struggling to convince him to make changes! With regards to Kwarassey, it just unfair to expect any continuity and harmony with the defense when you don’t give the keeper the chance! No good coach changes his keeper after an initial shaky outing in the FIRST game of a tournament! Most players and teams grow and begin to blend as tournaments progress and this is the reason experienced and good coaches stick with their starting eleven unless forced by injury or suspension to make changes! Overall, AA neither has the fire, the enthusiasm, the confidence nor competence to manage a team with such talented professional players. He should return to Kotoko!

anyone who finds a way to say that Appiah needs to stay is a lie.U cant have a african coaching player who play europe and have huge egos. Now we can rebuild and get better coach. Stop all the corruption. Did u know that Appiah is the second lowest payed coach in the world cup right after Mexico. No wonder the FA love Appiah because they can cash the money in their pocket instead of paying for a good coach. People that support Appiah will say that we look great in Wc qualifier but we always do. 2006 and 2010 Wc qualification can did not lose one match. in 2014 ghana lost to Zambia away 1-0. How can u go into ur first WC game and not know ur starting lineup. The Wc is not a surprise he had 3 years to prepare.

Please I need people to join me on this platform to campaign for the GFA to appoint Marcel Desailly asap as Appiah's technical IQ is unacceptable! We need to hear what his answer would be to this question; why was Adam Kwarasey replaced by Dauda after our first game?? Serious questions has got to be asked and answered..

Ghana did so much wrong today. For starters, the system was all wrong. Using a 4-4-2 was not the best considering the opposition. When you have pacy players like Ronaldo and Nani, you need to pack the midfield to stiffle them. The Ghana midfield was overrun and on a good day for Ronaldo, there would have been a cricket scoreline. Ghana needed to use the pace and skill of Jordan Ayew instead of Majid Warris who was extremely static and missed the best chance of the game for Ghana. All those who dislike Muntari saw for themselves today that Ghana is not the same without his industry, long passes and shooting ability from long range. He brings variety to the Black Stars and today they were extremely predictable.

Where is that prophet who said that God told him Ghana will get to the semis?Anyway the only aspect of that prophecy I know will come true is Nigeria getting to the semis and going all the way to the final. I am sure it was Nigeria God told him but he thought he can do what Jacob deceived Abram to do.He thought that he can steal Nigeria s glory by transferring it through false prophecy.

Sorry, if Muntari is the answer than Ghana is screwed. Kwadwo Asamoah is our playmaker but Appiah couldn't see that. That's where we lost it...not through Muntari

I have watched Akwasi Appiah closely since he took charge of the Black Star. I watched his performance at the Afcon. During the qualifiers, I monitored his performance closely in terms of Tactics. I can say beyond all reasonable doubt Ghana can never win anything as a country with Akwasi Appiah as the Coach. At this World cup, we could have won our game against USA if only he chooses the right players. He blew it up big time. When Kevin complained he marked him up for expulsion. Which he eventually carried it out at wrong time by holding all Ghanaians in a ransom. Todays match was lost even before it was played, coupled with choosing the wrong players and making wrong substitution when we needed goals. How on earth will any good Coach substitute Ayew for Wakaso when we needed goals. If we would like to be trophyless for the next four years we can retain Akwasi Appiah as our Coach. You can give Akwasi Appiah, Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar in the same team but I can assure you that he will win nothing.

I do not expect AA to be professional and resign like some professional coaches have done after disappointing their fans at this world cup! AA is not a professional so he will wait to be sacked! Former Zambian coach, Renard has always admired the rich talent of the Ghana team. He might be the man-I like his enthusiasm!

PAINFUL EXIST!!! We the friends of black stars, regret to announce the demise of our darling team, which until her death was taking part in the world cup!We pray that the good lord will grant all Ghanains the fortitude to bear this irreparable lost and we hope the black stars will appear in the next African cup of nations, which by the grace of God they shall make it to knockout stage . Because am a realist and i ve always known we wont make it to the knockout stages,i have since changed my allegiance to the super eagles of Nigeria.Stephen Keshi's lads won the African cup of Nations and now still standing out...this is no fluke. As a pan Africanist,we must all key into Nigeria's success and hopefully Algeria too.
