Ghana's Agyemang Badu first to score at 2013 AFCON

Published on: 20 January 2013

Ghana midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu scored the first goal for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

The Udinese ace stretched his leg to connect home Kwadwo Asamoah's carpet cross from the left in the 40th minute in Ghana's Group B opener against DR Congo in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.

Badu has now scored two goals in three Africa Cup of Nations appearances.

His stunning strike for Ghana against Mali during the Group stage at the 2012 finals in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea was shortlisted for the FIFA Puskas Award.

The tournament's opener between South Africa and Verde and the other Group A clash Angola and Morocco failed to produce goals on Saturday.

Let's keep our fingers crossed he doesn't get injured. Who's more committed to the Black Stars than Agyeman Badu?

Unconvincing! Nation cup is a difficult terrain whoever thinks is a walk in the park is kidding himself. This explains why we haven't won it in over thirty years. Dede was heavily missed in this one.

Next up is Mali. Its certainly going to be the most difficult game(at least that's how it appears on paper). Summary of todays game:unconvincing,no cohesion and no cutting edge. Adomah was way below par. Dede should have been there. They certainly need to lift up their game against Mali. All is not lost.

Fatau Dauda was Ghana's best player...more room for improvement, we should revert back to 442 with Clottey and Gyan upfront, why can't the Black Stars just keep possession of the ball and control a game?? 2 nil up against a decent outfit, all we could have done was keep possession and the control the game.

GHANA VS CONGO DR SOMETIMES, I DONT KNOW WAT AA IS THINKING PLAY THE 5 3 2 FORMATION. PLAY BREAK N PASS BALL. 2/3 TOUCHES ONLY FOR EVERY PLAYER...AT ALL TIMES IN THE FIRST HALF, U COULD VISIBLY SEE THAT GYAN NEEDS HELP. HE NEEDS SOMEONE TO DO GIVE N GO! THE MIDFIELD IS NON EXISTENT, AND DEREK IS NOT DISCIPLINED. DEREK DOSENT FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS. HE IS USELESS! THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR DEREK ARE VERY SIMPLE... A. BREAK/STOP ATTACKING ADVANCES OF OPPONENTS INTO THE GH HALF B. RELEASE THE BALL TO THE WINGERS OR THE $TRIKERS AND REST. I REPEAT, NO BACK PASSES! THIS ISNT WAT DEREK WAS DOING. HE WAS CAUGHT TRYING TO BE A STAR ON THE FIELD. HE RARELY TRIES TO STOP OPPONENTS ATTACKS INTO THE GH HALF. ON THE OCASSION THAT HE DOES, DEREK IS SEEN HOLDING UNTO THE BALL LIKE HE THINKS HE IS MARADONNA OR MESSI. IDIOT, JUST WIN THE BALL AND PASS IT I TOLD U TO LEAVE DEREK ALONE. NOW U SEE? I DONT SEE ANY URGENCY, AND SERIOUNESS WITH THE TEAM, YET THEY R NOT URGENT IN FORCING THE ISSUE. THE BEST PLAYERS THUS FAR HAS BEEN BADU, WAKASSO, AKAMINKO, FATAU ASAMOAH IS LEAKING THE LEFT BACK AT TIMES. OUR 4 N 5 PLAYERS NEED TO BE AWAKE AT ALL TIMES IN THE 18YARD BOX WHEN THE OPPONRNTS ARE ATTACKING AA IS NOW PAYING THE PRICE FOR NOT CALLING NATURAL LEFT BACKS LIKE DAVID ADDY AND NANA ASARE WHY DONT U USE KISSI BOATENG, HUH? U KNOW KISSI BOATENG IS NOT UP TO STANDARD SO WHY DID U EVEN CALL HIM FOR THIS TOURNAMNT? THE TEAM IS NOT DISCIPLINED. LOOK AT THE NUMBER OF CARDS GH RECEIVED? HW3, AFFUL CANT PLAY THE 3. THE CONGO DR PLAYERS ARE RUNNING PAST HIM LIKE WATER. START AFFUL ON THE 2 AND SIT DOWN PAINSTIL TILL THE LATTER STAGES OF THE SECOND HALD. PAINSTIL DID A GOOD JOB AT HOLDING THE RIGHT BACK SPOT. AA BETTER PUT WAKASSO N KISSI BOATENG AT THE LEFT BACK I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY BOYE WAS ALLOWED TO START. AA, SHOULD USE AKAMINKO AND AWAL AS STARTERS INSTEAD THIS IS A WOEFUL PERFORMANCE. IM DISAPPOINTED. WE CANT GO ANYWHERE IS OUR DEFENCE MAKES CARELESS MISTAKES LIKE THIS..TWEAAAA! STRIKERS/attackers win you a match, DEFENDERS win you a tournament. PLAY THE 5 3 2 FORMATION. PLAY BREAK N PASS BALL. 2/3 TOUCHES ONLY...AT ALL TIMES

Akwasi Apppiah, please i beg you in the name of Jesus that Kwadzo Asamoah is too good to be kept at lateral defense. He is the only ball jogger we have on our side out there besides Dede who could not make it and for once that he(Kwadzo) moved forward, we had a goal. Experience is paramount in the cup of nations, too many debutants...John Painstil is too rusty to be commanding a starting place. Next game, Vorsah comes in for Akaminko, Kissi Boateng in place of K. Asamoah and Afful in place of John Painstil. As for Painstil, his experience is not even showing and he has absolutely nothing to offer.I hope AA goes back to watch the tape again so that we can being the best out of Kwadzo Asamaoah.

Akwasi Appiah and his GFA cronies are prejudice and discriminate against foreign born Ghanaian players. Appaiah is only comfortable with players who wouldn't question his shambolic decision making processes. So far he has managed to eliminate excellent players (Ayew brothers and Kwarasey) with remarkable talents simply because he doesn't have the skills to manage them. And the result is 2-2 draw against a team that only agreed to participate in the tournament yesterday. All who advocated for local coaches should think AGAIN!

You Ghanaians are being too hard on your coach and team. Congo DR are not minnows. You simply over-estimated your team's superiority over Congo. Ghana is not way above the other teams in the tournament as you have just found out to your rude shock. Have a bit of humility and you will discover that your team actually had a decent game except they met a strong opponent.

I believe e coach's tactics was to blame for e draw. Ghana's strength has always been in the midfield which previous Ghana coaches knew, hence playing one striker Gyan and fielding more midfielders. A. Appiah chose to play a 4-3-3 formation with only one striker in the top three. Again midfield was outplayed b'cos Derek Boateng was a dark horse in the game. But again, we always start tournaments slowly so hoping for the best. Jux hoping K. Asamoah will be put back in midfield where he is at best being a midfielder. He is a hugely underutilized talent in that defense. The only time he surged forward resulted in a goal from his assist. Come on Appiah.

lest i forget. k. asamoah scored e 2nd goal from dat header from e corner. he will be most useful in midfield where he is free to attack
