Ex-Ghana international Ibrahim Tanko has lost his job as assistant coach of Cameroon together with his boss Volker Finke after they were fired on Friday.

The exit of the duo was after the Executive Committee of the Cameroon Football Federation decided on Friday not to renew their contracts.

Tanko has been second-in-command of the Indomitable Lions since May 2013.

The decision was taken at an executive meeting of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot), where Alexandre Belinga was placed in temporary charge of the side.

Tanko and Finke's contract with Fecafoot expired several weeks ago and will not be renewed after a number of disagreements over the past 18 months.

The decision to remove the duo comes two weeks before the side begin their qualification campaign for the 2018 World Cup in Russia with a two-legged second round tie against Niger.

A statement on Fecafoot's website, that was signed by president Tombi A Roko Sidiki who took over the reins of the federation last month, did not give reasons for the decision but said it had been made in consultation with the country's new sports minister, Bidoung Mpkatt.

Finke, 67, and his Ghanaian assistant led Cameroon's revival after their slump three years ago but their participation at World Cup campaign in Brazil last year was abysmal as they lost all three matches and were criticised for petulant behaviour that included an on-field spat between Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Benjamin Moukandjo.

They were also knocked out in the first round of the African Nations Cup finals in Equatorial Guinea earlier this year, but had made a 100 percent start to the qualification campaign for the 2017 tournament after two games.

Belinga will be assisted by former Cameroon international Djonkep, who was part of the squad that reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 1990.

Together with Finke, they recorded 12 wins, 9 draws and 7 defeats, guiding Cameroon at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

Local managers Alexandre Belinga and Bonaventure Djonkep will be in charge when the Lions face Niger in their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying tie, with the first leg scheduled in Niamey on 13 November and the return leg in Yaoundé four days later.
