Injured Nigeria defender Uwa Echiejile out of World Cup

Published on: 07 June 2014
Uwa Echiejile is out of the World Cup.

Nigeria say defender Uwa Echiejile is out of the World Cup with an unspecified injury.

The team said in a statement on Saturday from their training base in the United States that the Monaco left-back had a muscle tear and needed three weeks to recover.

The statement said Echiejile will be replaced by Ejike Uzoenyi, who was in Nigeria's preliminary World Cup squad but was initially cut from the final 23. Nigeria say FIFA has been informed of the intended switch.

Coach Stephen Keshi was quoted as saying there wasn't enough time to wait for Echiejile to recover.

However, England-based central defender Kenneth Omeruo will be fit for the game against Iran, the statement said, after an ankle injury sustained in a collision with a teammate at a training session last week. Omeruo had a scan on the ankle on Saturday.

Nigeria played the U.S. on Saturday in a final friendly for the African champions before they start their World Cup on June 16.

@ James Ansah .... james i somehow agree with your opinion but i dont think this is schlupps time to replace any of our experience defenders.. you talking of schlupp the whole time.. tell me who should schlupp replace in the team .. my brother he did well against the netherlands but please watch the match again any experienced midfileder or forward player can outtrick him easy.. dont compare him to jonathan.. jonathan had many friendlies and was more experienced even though he was young before the 2010...what is so wrong about our john boye and jonathan not capable of stoping big names or what.. please believe in the boys.. nkoom was taking because of his support to crossings.. and dont forget no player covers back when we loose the ball to our opponents better than Adomah does..these are the qualities some of the players have got.. if we should loose aginst some of these names--leading us not to qualify.. wouldnt be because of accam.. akaminko or schlupp... this is my opinion... the playesr need to focus .. they should quit zonal marking and do man marking its better.. i believe personally that we will crash usa..

Mighty Ghana should pay more attention to the U.S game. They now have big signs in the stands that read "BEAT GHANA" in all USMNT games. Their wish in Brazil is to beat Ghana and it doesn't matter if they don't even advance from the group, they'll be satisfied enough. U.S GAME PLAN: ".......Ghanaians are very skilled, physically strong and faster than us, so we have to win the technical aspect and outsmart them. Our midfielders should drop back immediately we lose posession to aid our defence and counter-attack when their defence fall asleep. I think the blueprint is laid out guys, it's time to get it done......." Secretely recorded, beware of this BLACK STARS!

Ghana should definitely do better than Nigeria did. I know it is too late to change anything, but it still baffles me Appiah reducing our defense by two players (Schlupp and Akaminko), instead of dropping ADOMAH who is adding nothing to our team that someone else can't do better, and dropping one player from the oversaturated midfield. How many midfielders is he going to play in a game? And the gaps Inkoom leaves at the back while going forward with weak crosses. Scares me...

The most important match for Ghana in Brazil is against the USA! Ghana needs to PEAK AT THE RIGHT TIME for this match because the last time I checked, BS are SLOW STARTERS AND PEAKS LATE IN TTOURNAMENTS! We have our work cuts out for us in this years WC and should we fail to PEAK for the start of the opener against the STARS N STRIP'S in Brazil, we are definitely out of the WC and our flight ll be ready to take us back to Ghana! This is a serious matter and am surprised people has been saying tha,the monday friendly against Korea shouldn't be a serious match for us in order to avoid injuries! Maybe people are just been naive and are underestimating the task ahead and the group we find ourselves in! We have had only one friendly match against the Dutch's and though we had a solid game against them, there is still more work to be done and AA should use all his full set against the Koreans! The Koreans are reportedly sick from virus and we should take advantage of that to play all our formations, tactics, strategies against them! Friendly matches helps to establish team chemistry and we should build our team chemistry on Monday! The US means business and they look wonderful in attack and their build up to goals are simply INTELLIGENT and I don't want them to say that they FINALLY OUTSMART US! All our focus should be on USA and the Germans BECASUE those are the two most crucial matches! This WC is indeed our REAL TEST!

See that's why dropping Jefferey Schlupp was a bad idea he was our best left back because of his physique he even said he could play anywhere if he was in the team and he is very versatile as well now we have try Essien there as a central defender although he played there during his Liberty Professionals days as a central defender if they would have keep Schlupp maybe as a back up to Afful he would have been a safe bet to play that position in central now we have to play guys out of positions and try to rotate them let's see if it will work against South Korea on Monday I remember back In 2010 they kept Johnathan Mensah who was inexperience but manage to get the job done there although he did better I felt they could have done the same for Jefferey Schlupp who in fact has the physical presence and height to go toe to toe with Cristano Ronaldo Bastian Swinteiger and perhaps Altidore even our Moses Foh Amoaning was questioning the Exclusion of Schlupp in The Ghana Squad check out and listen to what he said although Afful can play left back he does not have the physicality to handle the three players I mentioned he is good going forward he is a right back by trade now we have rotate Inkoom there put Kwadwo asamoah at left back there and put Essirn there let's wait and see what happens. This is where Jefferey Schlupp comes in he would have that problem in playing everywhere now he is not there although he is comfortable playing left back. Let's see what happens against South Korea if that will work I will be watching close attention as to how we play thank u.

And also by the way this is john Boye rashad sumalia and Harrison Afful first World Cup taste only Inkoom and johnathan Mensah have experience in the World Cup by the way Na Kwame johns than Mensah came through the ranks of the under 20 team to go to the World Cup he was very young but never played at the senior World Cup he was playing in friendly matches for he was groomed and he later gained more game experience before being drafted into the World Cup ok Na Kwame.

And also Daniel I pare first time as we'll nothing wrong with these defenders and I never said Schlupp should go n replace all defenders please Na kwame. Ok it was just his physique and pace to go back n help cover man marking ok Na KWAME yes he did well against holland I watched the game and yes he was very inexperience at man marking he made horrible passes and lost passes his time along with Accam and akaminko injured wish him a speedy recovery and yiadom Boakye for AFCON and possibly World Cup.

Na Kwame ok yes I said Johnathan Mensah was inexperience at that but I was very wrong maybe you are right about him if you pay close attention to my comment the point I was trying to make here is that yes it is not Schlupps time yet all I was saying was that his versatility could have helped or used a bit here I was not talking of Schlupp the whole time all I said was his physique and pace and power and height could have been needed for these leading names of our opponents in our group and also I never compared johnathan Mensah to him I never did yes Inkoom can cross the ball and support and Adomah is a very good player who can cross and get back and defend. I never said these boys the defenders chosen for the team cannot get the job done they can believe me they will I was just saying at least the coach could have found a place for Schlupp then groom him as well there is nothing wrong with our defenders chosen here so please go back n read my comment very carefully before commenting please u are making it seem like I was talking of Schlupp the whole time no I was not even I liked the guy I am huge fan of him I hope coach Appiah gets it right by fixing the defense for a good run at the World Cup .

Keep eye on Fabian John and Micheal Bradley, especially M. Bradley...he controls our midfield for counter-attacks. He's a very smart player and highly creative.
