Bayern Munich ran out 3-1 winners against Bayer Leverkusen in Friday night Bundesliga action at the BayArena.
Javi Martinez bundled home from close range after a corner kick fell to him at the back post to give the visitors a lead at half-time.
And Franck Ribery had Bayern two up just before the hour mark, settling a long ball on the left flank from James Rodriguez, cutting in to his right and beating Bernd Leno at the near post to make it 2-0.
The goals were the first of the season in the league for both Martinez and Ribery.
A fortuitous deflection with 20 minutes to go had the hosts back in the match though, as Kevin Volland's shot hit Niklas Sule and wrong-footed Sven Ulreich to get Bayer back in the match at 2-1.
However, James put matters to rest with a stellar free kick from just outside the area in stoppage time, curling a left-footed shot around the wall and into the goal.
The win extends Bayern's lead atop the Bundesliga table to 14 points over Schalke ahead of the weekend, with the second-placed side facing an away match against RB Leipzig.
