Schalke midfielder Weston McKennie and Hamburg striker Bobby Wood have both been called up to the USA squad for the team's upcoming international friendly against Paraguay on 27 March.

McKennie scored on his USMNT debut in November last year, and has been rewarded for his tenacious displays for the Royal Blues since recovering from injury, helping them cement second place in the Bundesliga standings with a run of five consecutive league wins.

The 19-year-old is now eager to secure a spot in the national team too. "We have young people that are coming up that are always making an impact, making a statement whenever they do come in," McKennie told bundesliga.com recently. "It'll be exciting if I do get the call-up. I hope I do, and if I do then I'll prove I belong there."

Wood has had a tougher time of things with Hamburg, who slipped to bottom of the table with their 2-1 defeat at home to Hertha Berlin on Saturday. The 25-year-old has not scored since Matchday 2 this season, but is always a willing runner able to offer an outlet up front.

There is no room in the 22-man ensemble for the Bundesliga's other Americans, with this latest squad aimed at giving the next generation of players a chance to shine. That means that Borussia Dortmund's Christian Pulisic will get a breather over the coming days, as will Werder Bremen's in-form striker Aron Johannsson, and Eintracht Frankfurt's Timothy Chandler. Wolfsburg's John Brooks and Borussia Mönchengladbach's Fabian Johnson are both lacking fitness.
