MONTELLA: "THE GAME WILL BE DECIDED BY INDIVIDUALS"

Published on: 19 September 2017

On the eve of Milan-Spal, Vincenzo Montella introduced the meeting in a pre-match press conference at Milanello.

ON SPAL
“I have a great relationship with Leonardo (Semplici). I am happy to meet him again and face him in Serie A TIM. I would also like to congratulate him for the promotion in the top-flight, actually a double promotion, coming all the way from Serie C. (Spal) play well, they are very coordinated and are tough to beat, the games against Inter and Lazio set a good example. I think the game will be decided on set pieces, by individuals, because Spal are a very well-organised and compact team. We need the right approach form the beginning, to interpret the game well and soon because they are very aggressive. It won’t be an easy one".

ANDRE SILVA
“He needs to be sharper up front, should be more 'Inzaghian'. He has done well but still has room for improvement. On Sunday he seemed alright, he was one of the few who did not play and still came out to greet the fans (at San Siro). I notice these things and I appreciate them. He has not expressed any discontent. With no doubt, he will play from the start tomorrow. I still have to decide who will play alongside him. He's the only player I can confirm will have a starting berth".

SQUAD ROTATION
“We try to rotate as much as we can. We have many games coming up and there is barely time to prepare for each match. This is why training and watching videos on our rivals are vital to us. Competitiveness inside the squad is very important for any big team. The season is long and our ambitions are big. We have many players with different characteristics, we will consider our players’ strengths and make our choices based on the game we play. Up to now, things have gone well, it seems that I have made the right choices but that is only thanks to the players because they have performed well".

DEFENCE
"Abate has more similar characteristics to Conti than Calabria, but both can play well in this position. Whether Calabria will play I don’t know yet, his role is very demanding, although he has not played as much as others. Musacchio has been playing a lot, almost every game. He has had an immediate impact on the team, considering he comes from a foreign league he has adapted very fast to our style of play. Bonucci has also had a very positive impact on the team. He is not worried at all, neither am I. We have increased our defensive level, we are more experienced and more solid compared to last year thanks to him. He has made some small mistakes and he is aware of them but there is no need to be concerned, he is a very competitive player. Franck (Kessie) is only 20. It’s normal for a young player to have ups and downs. He is now playing in front of almost 60 thousand fans at San Siro. We need to give him time and allow him to find his own way".

OFFENSIVE LINE
"Calhanoglu is an offensive midfielder but he does so well going forward that sometimes he does the job of a striker. As for Kalinic, we all knew his qualities, on Sunday he showed he can be a team player and at the same time decisive up front. Suso can play in different positions. He already did when playing for Genoa. He and Bonaventura can coexist, depending on the game. We are very happy with him at the club. I think he can continue improving because has a lot of talent. He will adapt to the system, regardless of whether he plays more up the pitch or not".
