Ghana keeper Adjei recalled after three-year absence

Hearts of Oak first choice goalkeeper Sammy Adjei has been recalled into the Ghana squad after a three-year absence.

Striker Matthew Amoah  and Quincy Abeyie, who were excluded from the squad for last month's Nations Cup qualifier against Sudan, were recalled.

Jordan Ayew and Prince Tagoe were left out of the squad while Sulley Muntari and Derek Boateng remain axed from the team.

Adjei has been named for this month’s friendly against Saudi Arabia, weeks after writing to the Ghana FA to rescind his earlier international retirement.

The 29-year-old quit the national team after the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations because of persistently playing second fiddle to Richard Kingson.

Adjei refused to train with Kingson in pre-match warm-ups and training, verbally abused him and threatened to attack the first-choice shot stopper.

His decision to quit the Black Stars was seen by officials as good riddance but after his sacking by an Israeli outfit, the Black Stars will give him the hope of returning to Europe.

Adjei put up an impressive display last Sunday in the Ghana Premier League derby when Hearts of Oak 0-1 win at Kotoko.

Tunisia-based defender Harrison Afful has made a return to the team after playing a role in Esperance’ Caf Champions League campaign.

Berekum Chelsea striker Emmanuel Clottey has been rewarded for his domestic form as he earns a second call-up under Kwesi Appiah.

Ghana will play Saudi Arabia in Dubai on 17 November.
