Wenger: Arsenal had agreed personal terms with Luis Suarez

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revisited their failure to sign Barcelona striker Luis Suarez four years ago.

Wenger made an infamous £40million plus £1 bid for then-Liverpool star Suarez nearly four years ago.

Wenger believes Suarez would have definitely joined him at the Emirates had the release clause mishap been avoided, telling Bein Sport: “It was very close.

“We had an agreement with the player. We had been wrongly advised that he had a clause, a minimum [fee release] clause.

“We had an agreement with the player, you can ask him. I'm convinced that he wanted to join us.

“And then they [Liverpool] kept him one more year, improved his contract and promised to sell him to a team abroad."
