Ghana FA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi has revealed talks are almost concluded to hand coach Kwesi Appiah a contract extension ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

The Black Stars trainer according to the GFA boss, will be handed a two-year extension after his current deal expires after the World Cup in Brazil.

Several Ghanaian football fans have clamoured for such a move after the ex international guided the Black Stars through an impressive campaign in the World Cup qualifiers.

Appiah made history to become the first Ghanaian to lead the Black Stars to World Cup qualification and many believe he deserves an extension as a reward for a good job done.

Others also believe securing Appiah’s future before the World Cup will be a show of confidence in his abilities and will boost his concentration at the tournament.

The Ghana FA had remained coy on issues about a contract extension of the coach – insisting their focus is on preparing the team adequately for June’s finals.

GFA President Kwesi Nyantakyi has now disclosed almost concluded talks to hand Kwesi Appiah a two-year contract extension even before the Black Stars leave Accra for their training camp in the Netherlands.

“We have met with the coach and have had initial discussions over his contract renewal,” Nyantakyi told Peace FM.

“We want to conclude all talks and guarantee him an extension before we go to the World Cup.

“We want to guarantee him a contract renewal for the next two years before we leave Ghana.

“We have an agreement in principle in place; we just have to firm up the details.”

The Black Stars will have very little rest after the World Cup with the qualifiers for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations swinging into full gear.

Ghana will play four qualifying matches in two months after the World Cup – making it unwise for the GFA to make major changes in the coaching department even if the Black Stars fail to meet expectations at the World Cup in Brazil.
