Abedi Pele: I will not contest Ghana FA presidential elections

Published on: 08 March 2011

Legend Abedi Pele has exclusively told GHANAsoccernet.com that he WILL NOT stand elections to be the president of the Ghana Football Association later this year.

This comes after GHANAsoccernet.com stumbled on intelligence indicating that the three-time African Footballer of the Year would run for the post later this year.

His loyalist Cudjoe Amankwaa, a Ghanaian hack based in South Africa, had told a section of the country’s media that Abedi would be the next Ghana FA boss.

Insiders in the game in Ghana also had been informed of Abedi’s desire to run.

But the legend has categorically rejected those claims insisting he will make a statement to officially make his position clear.

“I am not contesting the Ghana FA presidential elections later this year,” the three-time African Footballer of the Year told GHANAsoccernet.com on Tuesday.

“I am seriously tied with some pressing issues now but I will grant you an interview tomorrow to make my position clear.”

Meanwhile, Amankwaa has gone on Kessben FM in Kumasi to deny claims that he told a SuperSport journalist about Abedi’s Ghana FA intentions.

With Abedi out of the race, Nyantakyi is now seen as the run-away favourite with no serious contenders for the post.

Nyantakyi, who is seeking a second term in office, faces a challenge from ex-Hearts of Oak CEO Vincent Odotei, who has already declared his interest to fight for the position.

Odotei, who failed to get even one vote when he contested Nyantayki for the post five years ago, is not seen as a serious contender.

Another person keen on fighting for the post will make his position clear with GHANAsoccernet in due course.
