Bentancur: “A beautiful feeling to put the boots back on”

Published on: 15 May 2020

Rodrigo Bentancur is fired up and motivated. The Uruguayan midfielder, who embarked on an individual training program at JTC this week, spoke about his feelings upon returning to the pitch, how he experienced quarantine in Turin all while touching on his personal growth.

THE RETURN TO JTC

“Returning to the field was beautiful and it’s a wonderful feeling to put the football boots back on,” explains Rodrigo, who has been training individually at the JTC since Monday. “I'm fine, luckily I also trained at home in this period. I can't wait to start group training again. It will take time to regain the rhythm, but it will be beautiful.

"If we had to start again there will surely be difficulties: the heat, the absence of the fans that is very important for us, and to find the rhythm. For this we have to work 150%. The physical aspect will make the difference, but also our mental solidity.”

QUARANTINE

“I decided to stay in Turin, quarantining my fiancée and two friends of mine who had come to visit me and got stuck here. Luckily my uncle was here too, who is also my personal trainer and he "killed" me by making me do 70 personalised workouts in 50 days, but it only did me good.

“I also started taking some courses to improve my English and I watched several series. I don't really like showing my life on social media, I am reserved and calm.”

REFLECTING ON HIMSELF

"As a kid I admired Lampard and Gerrard who played half-wing, and as a ‘regista’ I always liked Busquets,” confesses the Uruguayan. “I have seen a lot of their videos and games and it has helped me to learn.

"My role? I feel comfortable in the role of a ‘regista’, but in midfield I like every role, mazz'ala, or in front of the defence. It doesn't make a difference to me, the important thing is to play. Since he arrived, Mister Sarri has always shown me his trust and I have tried to repay it, but I still have to improve a lot.”
