Berekum Chelsea beat Medeama 1-0 on Sunday to lift the maiden GHALCA Glo G8 Cup at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Captain Mohammed Basit drilled in the match-winner with a powerful low grounder after 83 minutes to hand the league champions their third trophy in four months.

It was Medeama who sent a message of intent under one minute when left-back Nurudeen Ali glided in a cross but Hans Koufie mis-timed his volley inside the box for a relieved goal kick for Chelsea.

Chelsea responded six minutes later when midfielder Jafaru Abdulai fired home a free-kick from 20-yards but his effort rolled into the hands of goalkeeper Stephen Ahorlu.

The champions piled the pressure but Nigerien international striker Moussa Mohammed thumped a shot from outside the box.

Medeama nearly punished Berekum Chelsea after Richard Afari was involved in a reckless defending.

The centre-back over-indulged in clearing the ball and striker Tanko Mohammed piled pressure.

He lost the ball in the process and had to clip Mohammed from behind.

Gladson Awako controlled a cross with his torso inside the box but goalkeeper Ahorlu was fast to pick the ball and avert danger.

The see-sawing contest continued when winger Koufie raced with the ball fouled close to the box on the right flank but free-kick was wasted.

Chelsea were forced to make an early change after left-back Richard Kissi Boateng was stretched off and replaced by Eric Agyemang.

Agyemang settled in well and nearly caused havoc on the 20th minute mark when he slalomed into the Medeama box but was closed down by captain Daniel Ocran.

Medeama had a free-kick shortly afterwards but Francis Coffie's neatly curled kick was superbly saved by John Mossi.

On the half-hour mark, Nuruuden makes a run and sets up Hans Koufie inside the box but the latter looks jaded and Chelsea managed to clear.

Striker Tanko Mohammed failed to connect with his head and left Medeama off the hook.

Medeama dominated the first half and had a lot of scoring chances but failed take the lead.

After the interval, Louis Agyeman charged forward and put through Hans Koufie inside the box but he muffed up again.

His cross was cleared out by the Berekum Cheslea defence.

Medeaam mounted another attack again and Koufie was put through but his header from close range effort went agonizingly wide.

Chelsea responded and went on the break and Basit powerful shot on the turf beat goalie Stephen Ahorlu.

It was his third goal in the pre-season competition.

Medeama nearly replied three minutes later when Francis Coffie failed to connect a cross with his powerful left-foot.
