British trio make Brisbane moves

Brisbane Roar have signed three British players as they restock their squad under new head coach Robbie Fowler.

A day after confirming the signing of Irish striker Roy O'Donovan, the Roar have bolstered their ranks by bringing in defenders Tom Aldred and Macaulay Gillesphey, as well as forward Aaron Amadi-Holloway.

The latest recruits come as Brisbane saw Nick D'Agostino and Dane Ingham move to Perth Glory.

Fowler has signed Aldred and Amadi-Holloway on one-year deals, while the length of Gillesphey's contract has not been disclosed.

Aldred, who played for Scotland at U-19 level, said playing under the former England striker was an opportunity he couldn't pass up.

The 28-year-old had been with Bury for the past two years, but most recently had a loan spell with Motherwell.

"I met with Robbie and he put in light what he is trying to do and it was something that really attracted me," he said. "It's a very competitive league that has featured some quality players and it's one that I'm really looking forward to testing myself in."

Amadi-Holloway scored three goals in 38 appearances for Shrewsbury Town last season, after previously playing for Oldham Athletic and Fleetwood Town.

Gillesphey, who started his career in the youth ranks at Newcastle United, was released at the end of last season by Carlisle United.

He had joined the Cumbrian club on a permanent basis ahead of 2018-19, when he played 27 games, having had two loan spells with them previously.

The 23-year-old central defender said: "I fancied doing something different and when the opportunity came about, it was definitely one I was interested in. The facilities here look top-notch and I'm really looking forward to it."

The Roar are 16/1 to win the Grand Final, with Perth Glory 4/1 and Sydney FC 4/1.
