CAF Champions League: Hearts of Oak midfielder Gladson Awako targets money zone

Hearts of Oak midfielder Gladson Awako has said the club's target is reach CAF Champions League money zone and they will do their best to achieve it.

The Ghana Premier League champions look ready for the continent's flagship competition after strengthening their double-winning squad with the signings of five players including Awako.

Awako was one of the best players in the league last season, inspiring Great Olympics to a respectable 6th position with seven goals and six assists.

His arrival has been Hearts of Oak fans hope of excelling on their return to Africa after a six-year absence.

“They shouldn’t expect too much,” Awako told Joy Sports in an interview.

“We’ll do our best, we’ll do what we can to get to the money zone which won’t be easy but I know with the team, the management and support from the board chairman I know we’ll do our best to get to the money zone. So they shouldn’t expect too much that we’ll go and win the trophy. They should limit the expectation, which will take some pressure off the team.”

The money is the same as group stage. The last time Hearts of Oak featured at the stage of an African club competition was in 2006.

They will begin their campaign for 2021/22 season in the preliminary round against CI Kamsar of Guinea.

Hearts of Oak are the only Ghanaian club that has won all three African club trophies - Champions League, Confederation Cup and CAF Super Cup.
