EXCLUSIVE: Arsenal starlet Zelalem tipped to benefit greatly from Rangers spell

Grant Smith believes Gedion Zelalem's game will go to the next level during his time spent with Rangers.

The 19-year-old midfielder, who is on a season-long loan with 'Gers from Arsenal, has been criticised for not being physically ready for the rigours of the Scottish Championship.

While there are massive wraps on him in North London, fans of the Glasgow giants have voiced their displeasure in him receiving so many games in a central midfield role under Mark Warburton.

The German-born teenager of Ethiopian descent who plays for the USA U20 side at international level has notched 21 appearances for league leaders Rangers this term, including 12 starts in the league, and Glasgow-based player agent Smith is confident his experience of playing football in an extremely competitive environment will hold him in good stead for his return to Arsenal.

"I've seen a lot of him. I rated him really highly before he came up here," Smith told Tribalfootball.com.

"I saw him for Arsenal in the Champions League, saw him in a couple of Youth Champions League games as well, and the U20 World Cup in New Zealand (with the USA).

"He's a good player. Technically he's very good, but it's just that size factor.

"It's difficult because he is playing central midfield at Rangers with the way they play. He's done well in certain games.

"It will be interesting to see if he kicks on at Arsenal.

"One thing from looking at him is that he's really really highly rated at Arsenal but there are kids up here (in Scotland) who have stood out more than him.

"So you are thinking if they were given the chance and got to play with better players they would stand out even more.

"This will do him the world of good being here and learning how to win leagues because Rangers are chasing the title and pushing so many games coming up.

"He is going to be a big part of it at the end and he's definitely got a future."

Smith is a former Scottish midfielder who played in England with Sheffield United, Swindon Town, Bristol City and in Scotland with Livingston, Dundee United and Ross County.

The 35-year-old has a number of talented Scottish-based players on his books including Rangers young gun Barrie McKay, Celtic tracking midfielder Aidan Nesbitt who is on loan at Partick Thistle, Dundee United forward Robbie Muirhead and Celtic defender Darnell Fisher who is currently with St Johnstone.
