Ghana-born Togolese international Eric Akoto says he feels disappointed he could not play for the Black Stars. Â
Akoto, 34, opted to represent the Hawks at the senior level after he was overlooked for a Ghana call-up.
The towering defender who currently plays for Austria Klagenfurt feels saddened he could not represent Ghana at the senior level.
“Yes I remember in 1998 when I was playing for the Under-20 team together with Stephen Appiah, Laryea Kingston, Sammy Adjei, Hassan Mohammed and Adu Tutu Skelley, it was very a great feeling,†he told GHANAsoccernet.com
“I always support Ghana anytime they play. Everbody knows I’m a 100% Ghanaian but circumstances did not allow me to play for them.
“Yes, of course I feel disappointed I could not play for Ghana at the senior level but God knows best. I have made my mark in the Togo National team and I’m glad they gave me the opportunity to represent them.
“I guess I didn’t get that chance with the Black Stars. But like I said I feel fulfilled as a player and I’m happy with my career.
“I wish I could have played for Ghana but it was never to be. It’s all well and good despite my disappointment.’
The former Liberty Professionals man was part of the Togo squad that played in the 2006 World Cup finals where they were knocked out of the competition in the group stages.
Akoto was on thee bus carrying the Togo team, which was attacked by gunfire on January 8, 2010 ahead of the Nations Cup in Angola - a situation which forced him to retire from the national team.
