Ghana striker Boakye-Yiadom confident of filling big shoes of Asamoah Gyan

Ghana striker Richmond Boakye-Yiadom has stated optimistically that he can fill the big shoes of legendary attacker Asamoah Gyan.

Gyan hasn’t played for the Black Stars since 2019 and the general impression is that his time with the senior national team has come to an end.

However, his replacement has been identified, with all the strikers invited in recent years failing to live up to expectations.

Ghana have had to rely on midfielders to get goals, with no attacker scoring in the second round of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

Boakye-Yiadom was recalled to the team for the crucial games against Ethiopia and South Africa but drew blank in both games with Andre Ayew stepping up to ensure Ghana’s progression to the next round.

However, Boakye-Yiadom believes with time he will become the country's number one striker.

“I know a lot of people have been saying that since Asamoah Gyan left we need a striker. I want to be one of the strikers to help Ghana score goals,” Boakye-Yiadom stated.

“If there was Baby Jet [Asamoah Gyan] then we need Boakye magic, that is my dream now. So, I’m going to work towards it.”

Yiadom debuted for Ghana in 2012 and has played 14 games, scoring six goals.
