Heung-Min Son has what it takes to become Tottenham's new leader

Published on: 23 July 2021

In a summer that has been marked by Tottenham Hotspur's struggles and numerous failed attempts to appoint a new coach, their fans can smile again as the club have announced that Heung-Min Son has renewed his contract until 2025.

Following his arrival in North London, Son has become a fan favourite both due to his skills on the pitch, but also because of his personality and the serenity he transmits off the field in any given interview.

"We are pleased to have agreed a new long-term contract with Heung-Min Son as we move towards the start of a new season and a new chapter for the club with Nuno Espirito Santo," said the club's new managing director Fabio Paratici.

"Everyone can see the real positive impact he has on the club, both on and off the field, and we are delighted that he will play a part in what we are trying to achieve in the coming years."

Having scored 107 goals in 280 matches in all competitions since joining the team back in 2015, Son formed a spectacular attacking duo with Harry Kane, with Tottenham being one of the most fearsome attacks in Europe at times.

Tottenham's new leader

Yet Kane is expected to depart the club this summer, with Manchester City being reportedly interested in acquiring his services and the Spurs desperately need a player to step up and lead the team.

Accused by some that his decision to stay at a struggling Tottenham could be considered as a lack of ambition, Son reiterated his affection towards the club he has served since 2015.

"It was already a big honour to play here for six years, the club have showed me massive, massive respect and obviously I'm very happy to be here," Son said after his contract renewal was made official.

"It's like home, especially with the fans, the players, the staff. There was no decision. It was easy. I'm so happy to be here and will be so glad to see the fans again soon."

One of the last of the Pochettino era

Mauricio Pochettino's project at the Spurs can't be regarded as fruitful in terms of trophies, as Spurs didn't win a single title, but the Argentine coach built a strong team, one which managed to compete for a couple of years both for the Premier League and the Champions League.

From that team that was put together by Pochettino, Tottenham offloaded Christian Eriksen, Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier, while prodigies such as Dele Alli and Harry Winks have failed to live up to expectations.

Son is the only player of that generation - bar Kane - who constantly delivers on the pitch, even last season, where Tottenham finished seventh in the Premier League.

The South Korean forward was named in the PFA Team of the Season, after netting 17 goals and producing 10 assists in a campaign where Kane found the back of the net 23 times and Spurs scored 68 goals in total.

With Kane being close to bidding farewell to his boyhood club, Tottenham need a player to step up and who better to lead that Spurs team than Heung-Min Son?
