Korea Republic's Ji So-yun vying for second PFA top award

London: Korea Republic’s Ji So-yun is in the running to be named the PFA Women’s Players’ Player of the Year for the second consecutive season after being nominated for the award.

The creative midfielder played a pivotal role for Chelsea Ladies FC last year as they became the first team ever to win the double of the FA Women’s Super League and the FA Women’s Cup.

She netted the only goal of the final last August as her side beat Notts County 1-0 at Wembley to win the FA Cup, before following up two months later with another strike in a 4-0 triumph over Sunderland to secure the league crown, with Chelsea eventually finishing two points ahead of runners-up Manchester City.

Since moving to London from Japanese side INAC Kobe Leonessa at the start of 2014, Ji has made a real impact and won her first PFA Player of the Year gong after almost helping the Blues to their maiden Super League title, as they lost out on the final day of the season to Liverpool on goal difference.

Having now helped Chelsea to two trophies last year, Ji will be hoping to cap it all off by being named the Player of the Year once again.

The 25-year-old will however face stiff competition from team-mates Hedvig Lindahl and Gemma Davidson, City attacker Izzy Christiansen and Sunderland’s up-and-coming talent Beth Mead, with the winner to be announced at the PFA awards ceremony on April 24.

Despite her relative youth, Ji has already accomplished plenty in her career having made her international debut for Korea Republic at the age of 15.

She is currently the all-time top scorer for her national team and also won the FA Women’s Super League 1’s Player of the Year award in her first season in English football.
