REVEALED: Why Marcus Rashford took Man Utd No39

Published on: 22 November 2015

The secret behind Marcus Rashford's shirt number for Manchester United, has been revealed.

The Manchester Evening News says Rashford was named in the Manchester United squad for the first time against Watford on Saturday.

And if the 18-year-old striker had come on to make his senior debut at Vicarage Road he would have worn the No.39 shirt - because it contains a nine.

It was James Wilson who first revealed Louis van Gaal likes his strikers to wear a number which includes a nine.

Wilson said last season: "As I’m a striker, the gaffer wanted me to have a nine in my number and 49 was the closest."
