Tottenham complete signing of Emerson Royal from Barcelona

Tottenham have completed a €30m move for Barcelona right back Emerson Royal, with the Brazilian signing a five-year deal with the club.

Emerson was brought back to Camp Nou during the summer after spending two years with Real Betis, where he impressed. He made 79 appearances in all competitions for the Spanish side, scoring five times.

He had featured in all three of Barça's La Liga games so far this season, but the Catalan giants have decided to let the 22-year-old leave and Spurs have now confirmed the deal and that the defender will wear the number 12 shirt.

In a statement, Spurs said: "We are delighted to announce the signing of Emerson Royal from Barcelona, subject to international clearance and a work permit.

"The right-back has signed a contract with us until 2026 and will wear the number 12 shirt."

Tottenham have been searching for a new right back all summer, with neither Serge Aurier or Matt Doherty impressing at all last season. Japhet Tanganga has instead been deployed there in the opening three Premier League games and has done well.

Emerson becomes Tottenham's fifth incoming transfer of the summer, following goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini, centre-back Cristian Romero, midfielder Bryan Gil and 18-year-old Pape Matar Sarr, the latter of whom was sent back to Metz on loan.

Tottenham have started the new season excellently despite their tumultuous summer. Their protracted search for a manager made them a laughing stock but new boss Nuno Espirito Santo has guided the club to three consecutive 1-0 wins, taking them to the top of the Premier League before the international break.
