Verbeek replaces exiting Kurz

Adelaide United have unveiled Gertjan Verbeek as their new head coach, with the Dutchman replacing Marco Kurz.

The Reds had already told Kurz before the end of the A-League regular season he wouldn't be kept on for 2019-20.

They still managed to finish fourth behind Perth Glory and earn a home elimination final, where they beat Melbourne City 1-0 after extra time.

Their semi-final against minor premiers Perth Glory, when they went out 5-3 on penalties, proved to be the German coach's last match in charge.

Verbeek has been signed on a two-year deal, arriving in the A-League after a spell in Holland with FC Twente.

The 56-year-old has previously coached FC Nurnberg and Vfl Bochum, starting his coaching days as an assistant at Heerenveen immediately after retiring as a player.

He had been a defender who spent almost his entire career with Eredivisie side Heerenveen, playing more than 250 times over a 10-year period.

Verbeek said: "I have followed Australian football for a while now and have admired the work ethic and passion Aussies have for the game.

"I can promise the Adelaide United fans that our team will be incredibly hard-working and hope to entertain you all with some high-quality football."

Meanwhile, Western United have officially announced Mark Rudan as their inaugural coach.

Rudan, who left Wellington Phoenix at the end of last season citing a desire to be near his family in Sydney, has signed a three-year contract with the A-League expansion team.

The coach, who captained Sydney FC as a player, said it was an opportunity he couldn't have passed up.

"To have a blank piece of paper to create what you want, there's going to be some bumps on the way but I'm more than confident we'll see those through," added the 43-year-old.

Western United are 20/1 to win the 2019-20 Grand Final, with Adelaide United 12/1.
