Zemura stars as Cherries down Tykes

Published on: 11 September 2021

Jordan Zemura made his Bournemouth debut less than a year ago and had not started a Championship game until the opening day of this season

Jordan Zemura scored his first goals in professional football as Bournemouth moved up to fourth in the Championship with a dominant win over Barnsley.

The 21-year-old's early strike gave the Cherries a great start as the defender fired in at the second attempt after some excellent build-up play down the right.

Dominic Solanke doubled the lead within a minute of the start of the second half as the former Liverpool forward tapped in from a yard after Brad Collins had fumbled Philip Billing's cross.

Zemura got his second with nine minutes left as he broke into the box from 30 yards out and finished low past Collins - whose earlier saves had prevented a bigger scoreline.

Bournemouth ended a three-match winless run in all competitions with the victory, while last season's fellow play-off semi-finalists Barnsley are still looking for their second win of the season as they drop to 16th place.

Bournemouth handed a debut to former England and Chelsea defender Gary Cahill, but he was an observer for much of the match as Barnsley failed to register a shot on target all afternoon.

David Brooks - who had a big hand in Zemura's opener - almost doubled the lead three minutes after going ahead but his effort was blocked, while Barnsley were dealt a blow midway through the first half when Ben Williams was forced off after a challenge that saw Philip Billing get a yellow card.

The hosts could have had two goals in first-half stoppage time - Jefferson Lerma was offside as he tapped in Billing's flick-on before Solanke brought out a good save from the legs of Collins.

Solanke's goal made the game safe for the hosts, who almost got a third 20 minutes into the half as Collins saved Jaidon Anthony's effort from the edge of the box before Ben Pearson's effort was blocked in the aftermath.

Ryan Christie came on for Bournemouth with 20 minutes left to make his debut after his deadline-day move from Celtic and forced another good save from Collins 10 minutes later before Zemura wrapped up the win.

Bournemouth manager Scott Parker told BBC Radio Solent:

"It was a good performance today. I thought our general, all-round game was pretty good. That is the second game in a row where we have reduced them in terms of shots on target.

"The way we played, the way we built, the way we got to the final third and created numerous opportunities was very pleasing. We missed some big chances as well, so we could have been more clinical in those moments."

Barnsley manager Markus Schopp told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"I'm really disappointed. Each ball we won, in the moment we won it, we gave it away. Against a team like Bournemouth - they have such good possession - we didn't have the power today to come back.

"There was still quite a lot that we can take with us, but there are some things we have to improve fast. Otherwise we are going to suffer in the next [few] weeks."
