Zidane's drama at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano

Zinedine Zidane didn't sit down once in the first half at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano on Wednesday night as he watched from the touchline as drama unfolded on the pitch, with Shakhtar Donetsk taking a 3-0 lead against Real Madrid into the half-time break.

The French coach began the match by encouraging his players, but with each goal that went beyond Thibaut Courtois' grasp, his expression changed.

Gone was the encouragement and silence replaced it, as Zidane appeared frozen as he watched what was unfolding at Los Blancos' makeshift home.

What was even more bizarre was how the frozen nature of the coach's body transmitted itself to the bench.

There was no encouragement, no clapping and as goals flew into the net nobody on the Real Madrid bench moved a muscle.

Shakhtar's players were shouting in celebration and that was all that could be heard at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano as Zidane watched a disaster unfold.

The only change that the Frenchman made at the break was for Karim Benzema to come on for Rodrygo Goes.
