Fianoo Ghana FA position quest hangs in balance

Cudjoe Fianoo's quest to become the general secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is hanging in the balance over conflict of interest issues.

His open political affiliation is also creating discomfort for several GFA members who are not keen on another stand-off with the ruling government.

Kurt Okraku and Cudjoe Fianoo are the leading candidates for the job even though eight candidates are in the hunt for the post to be vacated by Kofi Nsiah.

Fianoo, who is the CEO of AshGold FC, is a member of the executive committee of GFA - the body which decides on who becomes the next GFA secretary general.

Some members of the executive committee have told Ghanasoccernet that Fianoo must step down from his position on the board otherwise as he wields an unfair advantage over the other contestants.

With the current GFA board having an uneasy relationship with the ruling NDC government, appointing an NPP parliamentary aspirant would be been as another slap in the face of government.

Fianoo twice contested opposition NPP parliamentary seat and with the ruling government thinking the GFA is opposed to their rule, appointing Fianoo will worsen the fractured relationship.

Some of the other candidates pitching for the job are GFA Deputy General Secretary Isaac Addo and another GFA official Emmanuel Gyimah.

Okraku, who holds an MBA in Football Administration from the prestigious Liverpool University in the UK, is the favourite for the job.

His work for GHALCA as the administrative secretary has brought massive positive changes to the body representing clubs in Ghana.

He is credited for the current format of the GHALCA Top Four competition, the President’s Cup and the return of Ghana’s FA Cup.

Fianoo is also tipped by the experts for the job because of his long association of football administration in Ghana.

His highest academic qualification is a Diploma in Journalism which leaves him behind Okraku but his experience in the game will count in his favour.

The current term of Ghana FA scribe Kofi Nsiah comes to an end and his stay will not be extended.
