Ghana to use $8m World Cup proceeds to build soccer academies countrywide

Published on: 18 July 2014
The $8m earned by the Black Stars from the World Cup will be used to develop mini academies in Ghana

Ghana will use proceeds from its participation in the 2014 World Cup to build soccer academies across the country, the Sports Minister Mahama Ayariga has revealed.

The Black Stars are expected to earn about $8m from their participation in the tournament in Brazil even though they crashed out at the group stage of the competition.

The Ghana Football Association has informed the ministry that monies accrued from the competition will be used to develop mini academies across the country to help discover more football talents.

The projects will be managed by government as the GFA has agreed that the proceeds from the tournament will be released to government to embark on the project.

"The Hon. Minister announced that the Ghana Football Association has written to him to inform Government that the GFA intends to make proceeds from the 2014 World Cup available to the Ministry of Youth and Sports for the establishment of Football Academies around the country," Ayariga wrote on his Facebook page.

The new concept is a departure from the previous promise of building facilities to be available to other sports in Ghana but the GFA insists it falls in line with the policy of helping other sports too in the country.

"We have informed government of our plans already and we are happy to move forward in this direction. This is not different from what we said previously," Ghana FA spokesman Ibrahim Sannie Daara told Joy FM.

"The pitches to be built in this concept of mini-soccer academies across the country can also be used by the other sports in Ghana which will also immensely benefit them as well as football."

Ghana are rebuilding their squad after their disastrous outing at the 2014 World Cup.

What about the Accra football stadium?, What about the bad pitches at all the sports stadiums?. Have the GFA learned anything from the world cup? Did they see how flat those world cup pitches were? Did they see how manicured the pitches were? I believe for every $8 million they want to talk about, there is another $16m that is being hidden. They are under scrutiny or else they would have kept that money.

Am at a loss what 8million. Is it the FIFA money for participation which tax payers money was use to pre finance which needs to be reimburse. And a point to note 4.5m have already been paid to players and the FA which every body knows what each player got but the amount for the officials is not known unless each individual have to calculate two or three players money among some number of official. Mr sannie when was a meeting held whiles you guys are refusing to go am face the presidential commission. And are now telling Ghana how reimburse tax payers money should be use. God is watching all of us

Tired with your propaganda agenda here. Didn't half or more of this money already go to paying players and footing the bill of the laundering of the money to Brazil?

I guess this is a smart move by the FA to cajole us to stop probing them. We need a full audited report of every pessewa of the tax-payers monies spent @ the mundial. Although this may sound nice, how can you project how to use this money when you have not accounted for all the monies spent in Brazil? The minister and Nyantakyi must also account for how they sponsored their wives and kids in Brazil- I don't know when and where;probably, they should do so when they appear before the commission. Mismanagement has become part and parcel of we Africans, especially black Africans and I wonder where we got it all wrong?. Can we ever be capable of managing our own affairs for once? I would not be surprised to here the hullabaloo that would engulf the spending of this $8m. Is it a curse or what? Although mismanagement, embesslement of funds, corruption etc can be named amongst the light skinned races, arguably, its worse amongst dark skinned people.I wonder y? Can dark skinned People be capable of managing their own affairs?. I am not a racist but that's my opinion. God bless our homeland Ghana...

What proceeds?4.5 million $ was airlifted to Brazil, plus aviation taxes, security that accompanied the money,Nyantakyi and his family $8000 a night five star hotel countless coconut of the beach,70 officials, condoms etc. The GFA owes the government in excess of $32,000,000 at least. Nyantakyi should be canned 50 lashes on his bare bottom for causing financial loss AA should get 49 lashes for bankrupt coaching ideas ,wasting of talent group of players. All the officials including Afriyie Ankra should be given 48 lashes in Accra sports stadium.

The nation will at a deficit. The most important thing for is for gfa to go and face the commission and stop the pr gimic.

the money is for the devolopment of football but not by the ministry. I think football inGhana is haven it own chalanges like owning refrees, division one clubs paying officiating fees, the F.A inability to get pesonel to work perminently at variose comitees to help handle cases ealy, look the yone one B problems. I think Kwasi should try please the gorvenment and the ministry, since they cat do anything if the F>A does things rigth. Coffie Sun City Radio , Sunyani
