PREMIER LEAGUE / Tottenham storm Etihad to spur title dreams

Published on: 14 February 2016

Tottenham edged Manchester City to claim a priceless 2-1 victory at the Etihadand climb to just two points off the top.

A second consecutive home defeat against title rivals - following last week's 3-1 reverse at the hands of leaders Leicester - leaves Manuel Pellegrini's men six points off the pace and with their hopes of being crowned champions at real risk of going up in smoke.

After a cagey opening 45 minutes, the match came alive in the second half. Harry Kane fired Spurs ahead from the penalty spot after Raheem Sterling was harshly penalised for handball. Teenage starlet Kelechi Iheanacho clambered off the bench to make it 1-1 with a smart finish, but Christian Eriksen restored the visitors' lead following a slide-rule pass from another substitute, Erik Lamela, and Mauricio Pochettino's side held on relatively comfortably to secure three massive points.

It is shaping up to be a grandstand finish to the Premier League title race. Despite losing 2-1 to Arsenal in dramatic circumstances, Leicester continue to lead the way on 53 points, two ahead of Tottenham and the Gunners, with the North London rivals set to face off at White Hart Lane next month. Despite being six points adrift, Manchester City cannot be ruled out either, having come back from similar positions to claim the crown twice in the last five years.
