Stephen Appiah wants current Black Stars to demand for more cash

By Patrick Akoto

Ex-Ghana Stephen Appiah has thrown a huge gauntlet by asking current Black Stars players to demand for more money ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup to cater for their lives after football.

Hell broke loose after government approved $9 million for the tournament with claims the amount was too high for a developing and poor-stricken nation like Ghana.

Players will bag $75,000 as appearance fee each with $15,000 earmarked as winning bonuses at the global showpiece.

The confirmed figure from the Sports Ministry continues to wage on in the media as others have drawn comparisons with other participating countries.

The Ghana government was forced to cut down a reported demand of $100,000 as appearance fee from the players – a claim which has been vigorously denied by captain Asamoah Gyan.

Appiah, who captained Ghana to two World Cups has urged the current crop of players to cash-in now that they are actively playing since they will be abandoned if they call time on their careers.

“They get the platform to represent our country. Players have to take appearance fees. People travel and they have to take appearance fees for the days that they stay there (Brazil),” he told Accra-based Power FM

“ I don’t understand what is going on with all this talk about bonus. It’s the same players who put Ghana on the map so they are doing a good job for the country.

“If I were there today, I will tell them to take more money. I am sure your surprise with what I'm saying but that is the stark reality.

“Asamoah Gyan and the rest, Michael Essien are there (in the Black Stars) now but tomorrow when they are not playing, nobody cares about them.

“I saw how ‘golden boy’ Abdul Razak and other former players were treated during the World Cup qualifier against Egypt. It was an eyesore and pathetic to say the least.

“Many of our former players are impoverished after serving the nation. And so those who are there now should take more money because when they retire, they will not matter again.”

Several former Ghanaian players have become destitute since retiring after helping the country to win four African Cup of Nation titles.

The 1963 and 65 winning group are yet to be rewarded by the state after they were promised  houses by deceased first Ghanaian leader Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Every budget for Ghana’s World Cup participation resurrects a ritual of debate over whether the amount is prudent for a one-month long competition or an overly wasteful outlay of scarce resources.

Appiah has also been in the news this week after he urged the Ghana FA to allow players to bring along their  wives and girlfriends to camp.

Do you think Stephen Appiah is right with his assertions? Do the players deserve more money? Please make your views known in the box below if you agree or disagree.

I agree with him on the bonuses to some extent. but i dont agree with him about players bring their girlfriends. Bringing your wife is a good thing because your wife is officially and contractually qualified to be with you. But for girlfriends, no no no. There is no official contract between a guy and his girlfriend.

I agree fully with you Capito. When they retire the whole country including those disagreeing with you here will forget about them. You should ask the old players who did their best for the country and you will see what they are going through right now. Is it not better to give them the money which they give back to charity than keeping it with these wicked and corrupt politicians. Stephen Appiah you are on point and those who do not agree with you can go to hell.

This idiot is trying to sow disunity and controversy in the stars camp. Instead of preaching patriotism and unity for a successful course, he rather wish the stars to fail be so he is not involve and playing anymore.

Absolute rubbish. What about teachers, doctors, police etc Ghana is more to you players more than you give.Stephen Appiah should shut it.You the players must learn to invest wisely instead of women and expendibe cars. Look at Essien if not for Ghana with his current form which country will play him.The money they are given is too much. Hypocrisy when he was a captain did he demand for more money?

I respected u for ur patriotism and as a captain of the black stars but its almost like ur played for the money. Every one in the country helps but are not remembered after serving. U can't take more than u deserve. These players have everything the would need in life and yet the little that can be used to develop the nation u want it all. Shame on u. How patroitic are u?

I agree with Stephen Appiah . After all most of the black stars players give back this money to the community through charity. It's better than letting our corrupt minsters and officials spend the money. It happened in both 2010 and 2006. Accounts for funds allocated for world up went bassaaa

Hey!!Buddy Stephen Appiah, if U dnt have a TEAM shut it.cos u are bringing controversy in the BLACK STARS camp..U wants the STARS wifes to be at their CAMP while U are a GHANAIAN knowing how these GOLD DIGGERS are hunting for their assets. Secondly, U are poluting the MINDS of the STARS or MORE MONEY instead of PREACHING PATRIOTISMS to the STARS..It ill be beter for U to use these energies of provocating the GHANAIAN MASSES to find a TEAM so tht U will be BUSY and not timidand LAZY at home publisising these attrocities to the BLACK STARS..GO FIND A JOB and shut it cos, THE BLACK STARS players knows what they will be doing themselves..They have been in two consercutives WC going into their third..Get a job or shut it.

All things being equal they should get more money...seeing as Ghana has more economical issues and most of the players make good money I don't think Appiah is right. The Abdul Razaks in their prime didn't make that much money so they deserve to be compensated and that's fair. As a modern footballer you have to think beyond your playing can't blame society for not investing in your future. Respect to our footballers is one issue, making the government pay you more than it can afford is entirely another subject. Although I think the big entourage who accompany the team to Brazil is not necessary and they shouldn't be paid all the crazy amount of money that's been rumored. God bless mother Ghana!
