Odartey Lamptey questions decision to axe Andre Ayew from Ghana's AFCON squad

Published on: 5 years ago

Former Ghana international Nii Odartey Lamptey has spoken out on his unhappiness with the dropping of Andre Ayew from the Ghana team.

The Marseille winger injured his hamstring at club training and did not make the trip to Abu Dhabi where the Black Stars are training.

National team coach Kwesi Appiah wasted no time in announcing that Ayew will play no part in Ghana's tournament in South Africa this month.

Lamptey believes that the decision made was too hasty a call and that Ayew's quality will be missed.

"I am a bit disappointed with the decision to drop Andre. I feel he is a key player and more could have been done to have made him join the team. He is one of the best players in the squad."

Lamptey however says that Ghanains should still get behind coach Kwesi Appiah and his team.

"But, that said, Kwesi Appiah is the coach and he has the final say. It is now up to all of us to support him and the team so that they bring what we all crave."

Ayew has now travelled to Marrakech in Morocco, to join up with the Olympique Marseille camp.

Odartey, You have served the nation so please do not make us question your judgement when it comes to football. The player is injured and you are questioning why KA excluded him? You have forced players to play while injured, and we end up on the short end and put the players' career in danger. if anything, our beloved Ghana has been blessed with a lot of midfielders. And yes, Dede brings in dynamism but we have more than enough to get the job done

He uses his fake injury to trick the coach. Is it wrong to drop him out? There is nothing wrong with the coach. I agrees with his decision

Y'all are just too petty... A Ayew needed only a few weeks to recover and he could have still taken part in the competition after his recovery... I couldn't agree with Odartey more, the decision to drop AAyew was too hasty. Those of you who are saying he faked the injury, you have to be careful... Why on earth will A Ayew want to miss the AFCON when he has pledged he will fight harder this time round for the cup to come to Ghana? We should stop this loose talks..they may cost us in future. No doubt, AAyew is currently the best player in Bstars now and he doesn't deserve this shameful comments from us.

I think we should not try to belittle the judgement of the coach. Andre would have been a great addition. Yes he may have recovered during the tournament IF we make it far but you need to question whether he will be FIT or even MATCH FIT to do what we all know he can do. We did that to Essien, John Mensah, Asamoah Gyan and it has come back to haunt us. With Andre dropping, the coach has set himself up well by taking only fit players. Indeed i do not think we will be lacking for Andre's dynamism as i believe Atsu,Wakaso and Asamoah are equally capable. Forget those saying he faked the injury. Lets rally behind those who have made it after all we have just one black stars.

You guys should know how to caption your articles. In the text you reported that Odartey expressed his disappointment n yet u captioned it that he questioned the exclusion of Dede. They are two different things. Some of us still learn from this site n we don't only enjoy the information u give, so take note.

I don't think he is injured. I believe he faked the injury because he was worried Coach Appiah would cut him! So, fake an injury and put 5 days on it. if the coach allows those 5 days then, you know you would have made the team any way. He may have genuinely felt he would be cut!!

Well Done, Coach Akwasi Appiah for 'chopping off' Dede. We should let our Black Star players know that they are not doing Ghana a favour by playing for her. Have you all forgotten the insults heaped on the GFA when Shilla Illiasu was taken to Germany 2006? How many matches did Captain John Mensah play in the 2012 AFCON? Dede should concentrate on his club career (as that's what he wants at the moment) and leave the committed and dedicated 23 to make us proud!!! Go Ghana; Go The Black Star!!!!!
